Outstanding Volunteer
Tom Logan
Tom Logan has been named as an outstanding volunteer by Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Eastern Panhandle. CASA volunteers are trained volunteers who are appointed by a judge to investigate cases in which children have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect. CASA volunteers do an in-depth investigation in every case to which they are assigned and prepare reports for the court's consideration. They also work with other agencies and prospective caregivers and make recommendations regarding safe and permanent homes.
According to Shawn Valentine, who nominated him, Tom has been a volunteer with CASA since July 2007. In that time he has already donated over 200 hours of his time and 2000 miles. "He endlessly lends his wisdom and support to other volunteers, staff and of course, the children he advocates for."
Tom is currently assigned to two cases. One case involved a teenager who had both juvenile services and an abuse case open simultaneously. The child had to live temporarily in a residential facility. In a Multi Disciplinary Team meeting, the child stood up and announced to everyone present, "I don't trust anyone. The only person I trust is my CASA volunteer, Mr. Logan."
The CASA staff have also come to rely on Tom, whether to take a case as a volunteer or help with handyman services, "Tom is quick to help." He assists with training new volunteers and is eager to help his fellow volunteers with a case when needed. In addition to volunteering with CASA, Tom is also a PASS volunteer.
:"Tom is the epitome of the best kind of volunteer. He is light of heart, loves magic tricks and is thoughtful and courteous to everyone. He doesn't expect anything in return. He does what he does simply for the smiles he brings to the faces of the children he works with."
