Casino gives $80K to United Way

CHARLES TOWN - In an annual donation Wednesday afternoon, officials with Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races donated $80,000 to the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle. The casino donated $70,000 to the nonprofit organization last year.

Since United Way of the Eastern Panhandle uses a community impact model to determine where it can use its resources, the money the casino donated can be used to address "key areas of community need," said United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Chair-elect Paul Espinosa.

MARTINSBURG - Peter Mulford has been named the new president and chief executive officer of the United Way of Eastern Panhandle, UWEP Board Chairman Tom Jones announced Wednesday.

Mulford succeeds Jan Callen, who is stepping down as head of UWEP after 12 years at the helm.

Callen to be honored by Scouts

MARTINSBURG - Jan Callen, executive director of the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, will be honored as the Distinguished Citizen of the Year by Boy Scouts of Berkeley County at a banquet later this month.

"He has been a remarkable citizen of Berkeley County for many years," Bill Powell, Distinguished Citizen of the Year committee chairman and Potomac District chairman, said Monday.

Martinsburg air show to fly again

Martinsburg air show to fly again

The 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard will host an air show and open house again next year at Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport south of Martinsburg.

The 2012 Thunder Over the Blue Ridge Air Show and Open House will be held at Shepherd Field on Sept. 15 and 16 in partnership with the community, the Airlift Wing announced.

Bank executive M. Rebecca "Becky" Linton appeared a bit frazzled Friday afternoon, but the cause — Christmas Cash for Kids — was a good one.  

The messages left for the City National Bank regional president piled up Thursday when she was being honored at the White House for her leadership with the community gift-buying program for children in need.
