Muscles get workout in Morgan

BERKELEY SPRINGS — Jason W. Marshall rolled a log over a small patch of newly-laid blacktop over a pothole at the bottom of the Morgan County senior center’s driveway off 187 S. Green St. in Berkeley Springs.
Volunteers like Marshall, a mortgage loan officer with Citizens National Bank in Berkeley Springs, found plenty to do at the senior center and Red Cross office as part of the United Way’s Day of Caring activities Tuesday.
Arnie Stotler, the manager of CNB’s Valley Road branch; Keith Unger, CNB’s vice president and trust officer, and Fran Waugh, an operations officer for the bank, helped with everything from patching potholes to painting lines in the senior center’s parking lot.
The work did not go unnoticed.
“I really appreciate the generosity of CNB for providing the senior center with volunteers for the United Way’s Day of Caring,” said Joel R. Tuttle, executive director of Senior Life Services of Morgan County, Inc.
Tuttle said that the United Way’s Day of Caring was being held in communities across the country Tuesday.
Some projects in Morgan County were completed before Tuesday, he said.
A handicapped-accessible bathroom was constructed at the Starting Points Center and a large garbage bin was built at Morgan County’s animal shelter.
On Tuesday, the four Day of Caring volunteers from CNB also cleared a large store room in the Red Cross office and disposed of the trash.
Tuttle said this will allow the Red Cross to be “better prepared to respond to emergencies.”
“We like to give back to our community,” said Marshall, who is in his second year of volunteering for the Day of Caring.
Tuttle was impressed with the foursome’s work ethic.
“No matter the cause, they are up for the task,” he said.
