Messages from the Hearts of Loyal Contributors
United Way is the best way to contribute to our local community. It benefits people of all ages, as well as needy pets. Giving "my fair share" each month is an easy way to donate. My mother, Betty Pugh, was a past director of United Way. She believed in the work done by its agencies, and convinced me that it was, and is, a well run organization with dedicated volunteers.

We first began giving to United Way when I started working for Hospice of the Panhandle in 1988. It seemed appropriate to donate to help the community since the organization for which I worked received so much help from United Way.Also, we had been familiar with Shenandoah Women’s Center through my volunteer work and brief employment there and Panhandle Home Health where I also worked. All three organizations had been founded by people in our community who saw a need and United Way provided much support to help them start up and grow services. We believe in supporting local organizations. Contributing to United Way enables us to do this. Our family has benefited from many United Way organizations over the years, most specifically the BC Parks and Rec., and the Martinsburg Boys & Girls Club. Both agencies provided many, many hours of summer play ground, soccer, basketball and photography classes for two active boys throughout their childhoods. We appreciate our United Way, which is why we continue to give every year.

I feel the United Way supports so many worthy causes! I personally saw the benefit of one in particular, Meals on Wheels. Several elderly family members received that service, but it was when my own mother and father, Joe and Libby Hutzler, needed assistance that my sisters and I realized the value of it, along with the volunteers who delivered the meals. Our Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and eventually was unable to use a stove or microwave. We would go and prepare meals and mark them for Daddy to heat in the microwave. Your assistance through Meals on Wheels helped them - and certainly helped us! The ladies who we spoke to were so kind! Mom and Daddy had nutritious lunches - and were so thankful! I continue to support the United Way and Meals on Wheels in honor and memory of my wonderful parents. Someday, when I retire from teaching, I plan to become a volunteer and deliver meals!

We always felt that by contributing to a "united" effort, we could be helping more people.
We trusted your group to know who really needed the money; therefore, you could direct it to the deserving recipients.
